Honk – make a noise

Free rapid reference tool to support phone and email campaigns

Honk simplifies advocacy by making focused information instantly accessible in a single place. It lowers barriers for people who want to call leaders by phone, email or in person, to take a position on the issues but who don’t have time to assemble the research they need.

Goal: simplify citizen involvement; increase the number of people contacting leaders about crucial issues.

The format provides access to a call script, contact info and all a person needs to contact decision makers confidently. Ideally, the content is researched and written by trusted non-profits, hosted on their sites.

How It Works

Each topic in Honk is broken down into several categories. The default ones are:

  • Summary: A brief introduction to the issue.
  • Message: the most important talking points; the focal point of a phone call
  • People: Key players in the issue, including a tool to find your local MP based on postal code.
  • Notes: A space for users to add personal thoughts or notes.
  • Timing: Important deadlines and processes to be aware of.
  • Impacts: Potential consequences if the issue isn’t addressed.
  • Context: Relevant background info to inform the discussion.
  • Values: The core values at stake (e.g., privacy vs. security).

From the dropdown menu, select a Topic, such as ‘Bill C-2’. The category buttons below will now reveal information about that Bill alone. You’ll also find a help menu button beside the dropdown.

Tap category buttons such as ‘Description’, ‘Risks’ or ‘Values’ to get an outline of that aspect. Values-based discussions can be more persuasive than facts, so ‘Values’ are included as a standard category. Use the highlighter to mark the points that matter most to you. Use Notes to add your own text.

During a phone call, users may rely solely on the script if that’s easiest. Other users may want to preview the other categories of info for a well-rounded understanding of the issues before a call, or to reference a point during an encounter. In this way it might also be used during a speech or interview or spontaneous engagement.

The options panel is accessible from the gear icon at lower left. There you can enable ‘multiple selection’ mode, allowing you to open more than one information category at a time. You can show your notes window and the call script at the same time, for example. On desktop you can also enable ‘preview on hover’, which shows any category you hover over with your cursor until you move the cursor away.

Site owners can change the logo and title at the top, make any combination of topics and category information, create new categories, edit the text in any category and sort them in whatever order suits. You can put more than one honk widget on a website.

For citizen advocates

Honk makes complex topics modular, so you can quickly grasp key details—whether for a phone call, email, or direct engagement with policymakers—without the need to sift through web pages or lengthy articles.

Caring people get daily appeals from organizations they respect to contact political leaders on urgent issues. But finding the time to research complex topics enough to speak out can feel overwhelming. Honk simplifies this process, making it easier for individuals and organizations to take effective action without extensive prep time. By using a standardized interface, the vocal rebel will always know where to look for a key detail.

Honk relies on the trust we have in the advocacy groups we support. The information can be curated by those organizations who do have the resources to write concise, informed and compelling content on their topics of concern. Real voices can make a real impact.

For campaign organizers

Honk is a free WordPress website plugin built by a digital designer who procrastinated about calling politicians because he didn’t feel he knew enough, or had enough time to research each of many issues. These days it feels like the world has more rabbit holes than solid ground.

By consolidating one person’s research and writing into a compact and functional space on a single screen I hope to take away some of the pain of venturing out on a limb – repeatedly.

Honk is easy to install, and in the back end you can write on as many topics as you like, use the standard categories or create your own. No user data is collected; their notes are stored in their own browsers.

On web pages a Honk can live beside a contact form or a video; pretty much anywhere. It works on desktop and mobile, and is free because the value is in moving a mountain together.
